Tilikum is currently accepting applications for the positions of Lead Cook, Guest Host, and Kitchen Assistant. These are part-time, year-round positions but hours will vary with the season.

Tilikum is seeking Christian men and women who are at least 16 years old to contribute to the spiritual growth and physical comfort of guests who are on retreat at the camp.

This is very part-time work. The Camp has more guests in the summer and fewer in the winter, so we can’t guarantee hours to work each week.  The schedule is completely flexible, which is ideal for the full-time parent looking for an evening away from the house, the recently retired interested in a few mornings a month, or the busy student looking to work during holidays and weekends.

The work is physical, with lots of walking, standing, climbing steps, and carrying.

Joining the Tilikum Lodge team comes with perks like permission to use the grounds, tuition remission for some camps, and eating scratch-cooked meals together.

Position descriptions

Lead Cook

The Lead Cook is responsible for preparing high-quality, visually appealing meals for Tilikum guests. The Lead Cook will also see that guest food service needs are met in a friendly and hospitable manner, while superivising food service assistants during his/her working shift. The Cook will also clean up and share responsibilities for areas of sanitation, inventory and record keeping.

If you love to cook, but have never been a “professional cook”, don’t let that deter your from applying. Many staff often also volunteer at their churches in the kitchen and hospitality ministries, and come with a wide variety of experience, both professional and self-taught.

Guest Host

A Guest Host is responsible for meeting the needs of and being available to assist the guests at the Retreat Center and other facilities including preparing and opening the facility, orienting guests to Tilikum, and responding to their needs. The host is involved with dining room preparation, serving meals to guests, and clean-up.

Kitchen Assistant

The Kitchen Assistant assists the Lead Cook in set-up, last minute food preparation, serving, and all aspects of clean-up including dish washing.

As we say in every interview, the technical skills in the kitchen can be learned. What is necessary are people who are humble, hungry for God’s work at the Camp, and who care about others.

General requirements

Communicate effectively and courteously with others, including employees and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service. You will need the ability to lift 40 lbs., bend and lift, sweep, mop, vacuum, operate the dishwasher and be on your feet for 4-8 hours (with breaks). Have a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card or willingness to obtain within 30 days of employment. Show cleanliness and be well groomed. A willingness and ability to work varied hours including evenings and weekends is necessary. Previous restaurant experience is helpful.

By actions, words and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to guests and staff. Have a strong commitment to Tilikum and its ministry along with an evangelical Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the institution’s goals, including a signed agreement with Tilikum’s Statement of Faith and Statement of Community Responsibilities.

These positions report to the Food Services Director. Wages begin at $14.20 per hour and goes up depending on experience. These positions are year-round, but hours will vary with the season. The busiest time of the year is from March to October.
